Ingredients

  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon ghee
  • 1 tablespoon active charcoal powder
  • 1/4 cup jaggery
  •  1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • A pinch of salt

Method:

  • In a pan, heat water, salt, and ghee on medium flame. Once it comes to a boil, reduce the flame to low and add rice flour to it. Mix it well without any lumps.
  • Cook the rice flour mixture for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously, until the dough comes together and starts leaving the sides of the pan. Turn off the flame and let it cool down a bit.
  • Once the dough has cooled down, knead it well to make a smooth dough.
  • In a separate pan, add jaggery and grated coconut. Cook on medium flame for 2-3 minutes, stirring continuously, until the jaggery melts and the coconut gets coated with it. Turn off the flame and add cardamom powder to it.
  • Mix the active charcoal powder to the rice dough and knead it again to distribute the charcoal evenly.
  • Take a small portion of the dough and shape it into a ball. Flatten it to form a disc shape and place a spoonful of the coconut-jaggery mixture in the center of it.
  • Carefully fold the edges of the disc towards the center to seal the filling. Use a modak mold if you have one to shape the modak. Alternatively, you can shape it by hand as well.
  • Repeat the process until you have used up all the dough and filling.
  • Steam the modak in a steamer for 10-12 minutes until they are cooked through.
  • Once done, remove them from the steamer and let them cool down for a few minutes.
  • Your delicious and healthy active charcoal modak is ready to be served!
  • Active charcoal has several health benefits, including detoxifying properties, which help remove toxins from the body. It is also known to aid digestion and improve skin health. This modak is not only a tasty dessert but also a healthier alternative to the traditional modak.
