  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (atta)
  • 1 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 cups water or milk
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (almonds, cashews, pistachios)
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder
  • A pinch of saffron (optional)
  • A pinch of salt


  • Heat a heavy-bottomed pan on medium heat and add the ghee to it. Let the ghee melt and heat up.
  • Add the whole wheat flour to the pan and start stirring it continuously with a spatula. Roast the flour in ghee until it turns golden brown in color and starts to emit a nutty aroma. This should take around 10-12 minutes.
  • While roasting the flour, in a separate pot, add water or milk and sugar. Heat the mixture on medium heat and stir until the sugar dissolves completely. Once the sugar has dissolved, turn off the heat and keep the mixture aside.
  • Once the flour has turned golden brown, add the sugar-water or sugar-milk mixture to it. Be careful while adding the liquid as it can splatter due to the high temperature. Stir continuously while adding the liquid to avoid any lumps.
  • Add a pinch of salt, cardamom powder, and saffron to the mixture and stir well. This will enhance the flavor and aroma of the halwa.
