Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati Rice
  • 1/2 cup Chana Dal (Split Bengal Gram)
  • 2 medium Onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Bay Leaf
  • 2-3 Cloves
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick
  • 2-3 Green Cardamom
  • 1 tsp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 2 Green Chilies, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp Red Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil or Ghee
  • 2 cups Water
  • Fresh Coriander Leaves, for garnish

Method:

  • Step 1: Rinse and soak the rice and chana dal separately in enough water for at least 30 minutes.
  • Step 2: In a deep bottomed pan, heat oil or ghee over medium flame. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter. Then add bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon stick, and cardamom. Saute for a few seconds.
  • Step 3: Add sliced onions, ginger-garlic paste, and chopped green chilies. Saute for 2-3 minutes until the onions turn translucent.
  • Step 4: Add red chili powder, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a minute.
  • Step 5: Drain the water from the rice and add it to the pan. Mix well and cook for 2-3 minutes until the rice turns slightly translucent.
  • Step 6: Drain the water from the chana dal and add it to the pan. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  • Step 7: Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts boiling, reduce the flame to low, cover the pan with a lid, and let it cook for 10-12 minutes or until the rice and dal are cooked and all the water has been absorbed.
  • Step 8: Once the Chana Dal Pulao is cooked, switch off the flame and let it rest for 5-10 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork.
  • Step 9: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with raita or any side dish of your choice.

Tips

  • You can also add vegetables like carrots, peas, and beans to make the pulao more nutritious.
  • Soaking the rice and dal before cooking helps to reduce the cooking time and ensures that they cook evenly.
  • Adjust the spice levels according to your taste preference.
  • Use good quality Basmati Rice for the best flavor and texture.
  • You can also use a pressure cooker to cook the Chana Dal Pulao. In that case, cook for 2-3 whistles and let the pressure release naturally.
