Ingredients

  • Mutton Bones – 500 grams
  • Tomato – 2
  • Onion – 1
  • Garlic – 5 cloves

  • Tamarind – small lemon sized ball
  • Coriander leaves – 1 cup
  • Curry leaves – 2 sprigs
  • Cumin seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Mustard seeds – 1 teaspoon
  • Dry red chili – 2
  • Turmeric powder – 1 teaspoon
  • Salt – to taste
  • Oil – 2 tablespoons

Method:

  • Wash the mutton bones thoroughly and add them to a pressure cooker. Add enough water to cover the bones and pressure cook for 6-7 whistles. Turn off the heat and let the pressure release naturally.
  • Once the pressure has released, remove the bones from the pressure cooker and separate the meat from the bones. Keep the meat aside.
  • In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, and dry red chili. Fry until the mustard seeds start to pop.
  • Add chopped onions, garlic, and ginger to the pan and fry until the onions become translucent.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they become mushy
  • Now, add the mutton bones to the pan along with 2 cups of water. Add turmeric powder and salt to taste. Mix well and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes.
  • While the rasam is simmering, soak the tamarind in water for 10-15 minutes. Squeeze out the juice and keep it aside.
  • Once the bones are cooked, remove them from the pan and strain the rasam. Keep the strained liquid aside.
  • In a pan, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and add curry leaves. Fry for a few seconds and add the strained liquid to the pan.
  • Add the tamarind juice to the pan and mix well. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  • Finally, add the cooked mutton meat to the pan and let it cook for 5 more minutes.
  • Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.
