Goan Nevri, also known as Gujiya or Karanji, is a traditional sweet delicacy from the coastal region of Goa, India.   • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup grated coconut
  • 1 cup jaggery (or brown sugar)
  • 1/4 cup chopped cashews
  • 1/4 cup raisins
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • Ghee for frying


Dough Preparation:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, ghee, and a pinch of salt.
  • Rub the ghee into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add water, a little at a time, and knead the mixture into a firm and smooth dough.

  • Add chopped cashews, raisins, and cardamom powder to the mixture and cook for another 2-3 minutes, stirring constantly.
  • Remove the filling from heat and allow it to cool.


  • Take a small portion of the dough and roll it into a thin circle, about 3-4 inches in diameter.
  • Place a spoonful of the prepared filling in the center of the circle.
  • Fold the circle in half, enclosing the filling, and press the edges firmly to seal the Nevri.
  • You can use a fork to create decorative patterns on the edges of the sealed Nevri.
  • Repeat the process for the remaining dough and filling.


  • Heat ghee in a deep pan or kadai over medium heat.
  • Carefully place the prepared Nevri in the hot ghee, a few at a time.
  • Fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides.
  • Remove the fried Nevri from the pan and drain excess ghee on a paper towel.
