  • Chana dal – 1 cup
  • Toor dal – 1/2 cup
  • Mixed vegetables (carrot, beans, cauliflower, potato) – 2 cups
  • Onion – 1 (finely chopped)
  • Tomato – 2 (finely chopped)
  • Green chillies – 2 (finely chopped)
  • Ginger-garlic paste – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind – 1 lemon-sized ball
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 2 tsp
  • Cumin powder – 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt – as per taste
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves – for garnishing


  • Soak the tamarind in hot water for 10 minutes. Extract the juice and keep it aside.
  • Wash the chana dal and toor dal in running water. Soak the dals in water for an hour.
  • In a pressure cooker, add the soaked dal, mixed vegetables, turmeric powder and salt. Add water to cover the dal and vegetables. Cook for 3-4 whistles on medium flame.
  • Once the pressure is released, mash the dal and vegetables using a masher. Keep it aside.
  • In a pan, heat oil. Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn translucent.
  • Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn mushy.
  • Add coriander powder, cumin powder, red chilli powder and garam masala powder. Cook for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the mashed dal and vegetable mixture to the pan. Mix well.
  • Add the tamarind extract and mix well. Adjust the consistency by adding water if required.
  • Cook for 10-15 minutes on low flame until the dal and vegetables are cooked and the gravy thickens.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with steamed rice.


  • Soak the dals for an hour to ensure they cook faster and become tender.
  • Adjust the spice levels as per your taste.
