Here is a breakfast recipe that is easy to prepare and delicious to eat.

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 2 cups wheat flour
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Water, as needed

For the stuffing:

  • 1 cup chana dal
  • 1/2 cup jaggery
  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1/4 tsp dry ginger powder
  • 2 tbsp ghee

Instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the dough

  • In a large mixing bowl, add wheat flour, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well.
  • Add water little by little and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and pliable.
  • Cover the dough with a damp cloth and keep it aside for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the stuffing

  • Rinse the chana dal thoroughly in water and soak it for at least 1 hour.
  • After an hour, drain the water and add the chana dal to a pressure cooker.
  • Add enough water and pressure cook the dal for 3-4 whistles or until it becomes soft and mushy.
  • Once the dal is cooked, drain the excess water and transfer it to a pan.
  • Add jaggery, cardamom powder, nutmeg powder, and dry ginger powder to the pan.
  • Cook the mixture on medium heat until the jaggery melts and combines well with the dal mixture.
  • Keep stirring the mixture until it thickens and comes together like a paste.
  • Add ghee to the mixture and cook for another 5 minutes until the stuffing becomes shiny and glossy.
  • Turn off the heat and let the stuffing cool down completely.

Step 3: Prepare the puran poli

    • Divide the dough into small equal-sized balls and keep them aside.
    • Take one ball and dust it with flour.
    • Roll the ball into a small circle with a rolling pin.
    • Take a spoonful of the stuffing and place it in the center of the rolled dough.
    • Fold the edges of the dough towards the center and seal the stuffing inside.
    • Dust the stuffed dough ball with flour and roll it gently into a flatbread, taking care not to break it.
    • Heat a tawa or griddle on medium heat and place the puran poli on it.
    • Cook the puran poli for 1-2 minutes on each side, applying ghee or oil if necessary.
    • Serve the puran poli hot with a dollop of ghee on top.

Tips

  • If the stuffing is too dry, add a little water and cook it until it becomes moist and pliable.
  • Be gentle while rolling the puran poli to avoid the stuffing from oozing out.
  • You can also use a mixture of jaggery and sugar instead of just jaggery.
  • Puran poli tastes best when served hot with a generous amount of ghee.

Conclusion

Karnataka Style Puran Poli is a sweet and flavorful dish that is perfect for satisfying your sweet cravings. This dish requires some patience and skill to make, but the end result is well worth the effort. Try this recipe at home and impress your friends and family with your culinary skills.
