How To make Masala Uttapam? | Instant Masala Uttapam Recipe

Uttapam is a popular South Indian dish that is often eaten for breakfast or as a snack. It is made by cooking a batter of rice and lentils on a griddle, similar to a pancake. Masala Uttapam is a variation of Uttapam that is loaded with vegetables and spices, making it a more filling and flavorful dish. Here’s how to make Masala Uttapam at home:

Here is a breakfast recipe that is easy to prepare and delicious to eat.

  • 1 cup idli rice
  • 1/4 cup urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp red chili powder

  • Rinse the idli rice, urad dal, and fenugreek seeds in water and soak them in water for at least 4-5 hours.
  • Drain the water and grind the soaked rice, dal, and fenugreek seeds into a smooth batter. Add water as needed to achieve the desired consistency.
  • Cover the batter and let it ferment for 6-8 hours or overnight. The fermentation process makes the batter light and fluffy.
  • Once the batter has fermented, add salt to taste and mix well.
  • Heat a non-stick griddle or a cast-iron skillet on medium heat. Once the pan is hot, grease it with a little oil.
  • Pour a ladleful of the batter onto the center of the pan and spread it in a circular motion to form a thick pancake.
  • Sprinkle the chopped onions, tomatoes, green chili, and cilantro on top of the uttapam.
  • In a small pan, heat a tsp of oil and add cumin and mustard seeds. Once the seeds start to splutter, add turmeric powder and red chili powder. Pour this seasoning over the uttapam.
  • Cover the pan with a lid and let the uttapam cook for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
  • Once the bottom of the uttapam turns golden brown, flip it over and cook the other side for 1-2 minutes.
  • Remove the uttapam from the pan and serve hot with coconut chutney or tomato chutney.

  • You can add other vegetables like bell peppers, grated carrots, or cabbage to the uttapam for added flavor and nutrition.
  • Make sure the pan is well greased with oil before pouring the batter to prevent it from sticking.
  • You can adjust the amount of chili powder and green chili to your spice preference.
  • Serve the uttapam immediately to enjoy it at its best texture and taste.

In conclusion, Masala Uttapam is a delicious and wholesome breakfast or snack that can be easily made at home with a few basic ingredients.
