  • 1 cup vermicelli noodles (semiya)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 green chili, chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/2 tsp chana dal
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/4 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 2 cups water
  • A few curry leaves
  • Coriander leaves for garnishing


  • Heat a pan on medium heat and roast the vermicelli noodles until they turn light brown. Remove them from the pan and keep aside.
  • In the same pan, add oil or ghee and heat it up. Add mustard seeds and cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add urad dal and chana dal and roast them until they turn golden brown.
  • Add chopped onion, green chili, and ginger and sauté until the onions turn translucent.
  • Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well and let the tomatoes cook until they are soft and mushy.
  • Add 2 cups of water and bring it to a boil.
  • Once the water starts boiling, add the roasted vermicelli noodles and mix well. Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan and let it cook for 5-6 minutes until the noodles are cooked and the water is absorbed.
  • Add curry leaves and mix well.
  • Turn off the heat and let the upma rest for a few minutes.
  • Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot.


  • You can add any vegetables of your choice to the upma, such as carrots, peas, beans, or capsicum.
  • You can also add roasted peanuts or cashews to the upma for extra crunch and flavor.
  • Adjust the spice levels according to your taste.
