Modak is a popular sweet dish that is often prepared during festive occasions in India. Traditionally, modaks are made using rice flour dough and filled with a sweet coconut and jaggery filling. However, in recent times, there has been a trend of experimenting with different flavors and ingredients to create unique variations of modaks. In this recipe, we will be making Beetroot Modaks – a fusion of traditional modaks with the goodness of beetroot.

Here is a breakfast recipe that is easy to prepare and delicious to eat.


  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 1 cup grated beetroot
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup jaggery
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut
  • 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • Salt, as per taste


Step 1: Making the filling

  • In a pan, add grated coconut and jaggery.
  • Cook on low flame until the jaggery melts and the mixture thickens.
  • Add cardamom powder and mix well.
  • Turn off the heat and let the mixture cool down.

Step 2: Making the dough

  • In a pan, add water, ghee, and salt. Bring it to a boil.
  • Once the water comes to a boil, reduce the heat and add rice flour.
  • Mix well and turn off the heat.
  • Cover the pan and let the mixture rest for 5 minutes.
  • After 5 minutes, add grated beetroot and knead the dough well.

Step 3: Shaping the Modaks

  • Take a small portion of the dough and make a ball.
  • Flatten the ball using your fingers to form a cup-like shape.
  • Place a spoonful of the filling in the center.
  • Gather the edges of the dough together to form a peak at the top.
  • Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.

Step 4: Steaming the Modaks

  • Take a steamer and fill it with water.
  • Grease the steamer plate with ghee.
  • Arrange the modaks on the plate.
  • Steam the modaks for about 10-12 minutes.
  • Turn off the heat and let the modaks cool down.

Your delicious Beetroot Modaks are now ready to be served! Garnish with some chopped nuts or saffron strands for an extra touch of flavor and enjoy. These modaks are not only healthy but also make for a visually appealing treat for any festive occasion.
